Suomussalmi is strongly positioned as a development zone for renewable energy and bioeconomy. The planned solar power park in Kurimo (Kurimo Solar) and a hydrogen refueling station support the green transition and low-emission transportation along Highway 5. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) enhance the use of renewable energy by improving grid flexibility and production control. Zoned industrial plots, efficient logistics, and established municipal infrastructure create favorable conditions for investment.
The planned Kurimo Solar power park and hydrogen refueling station in the Kurimo area will promote the green transition and support low-emission transport along Highway 5. The upcoming battery energy storage systems (BESS) will enhance grid flexibility and enable more efficient use of renewable energy. Zoned industrial plots, efficient logistics, and ready municipal infrastructure provide a strong foundation for sustainable investments—now and in the future.
Suomussalmi offers a promising location for the development of hydrogen distribution infrastructure. A hydrogen refueling station would primarily serve heavy-duty transport and future logistics solutions along Highway 5. The project would support the transition to zero-emission transportation and strengthen the region’s strong profile in renewable energy production. Access to hydrogen would also enable the development of industrial solutions based on the hydrogen economy in the area.
Kurimo Data Center combines high network capacity, circular economy opportunities, and municipal support—making it a perfect location for high-performance data services in Finland. It is construction-ready, scalable, and located directly next to the power grid. Kurimo offers a smart solution for demanding data capacity—responsibly and efficiently.
Suomussalmi offers a strong foundation for investments based on wood processing. The region has a significant accumulation of industrial wood—nearly 750,000 m³ annually—as well as an ample supply of energy wood, providing a profitable raw material base for wood refinement, for example through extraction and pyrolysis processes.
The Kurimo area holds significant volumes of underutilized bark based side streams from the forest industry. This presents a unique opportunity to advance circular economy solutions and green industry applications.
The raw wood side streams are not yet fully utilized in the area. The WP 35 post peeler offers a practical, efficient, and scalable solution for further processing of these streams.
The area offers substantial amounts of untapped biomass resources, such as forest chips, sawdust, and other wood-based by products, which can be used as renewable raw material for producing sustainable biochar and pyrolysis-derived products. The project supports the green transition, enables long-term carbon sequestration, and aligns with the EU’s climate goals.
The biomass raw material base in Suomussalmi enables the planning of industrial investments in areas such as biochar production, pellet manufacturing, and other high
value-added products.
